A lot has been written Original Dorotik CA A lot has been written about the prison system lately -- why we as a nation incarcerate so many, why the bureauocratic and unweildy system is only expected to make minimal cuts to its 11 billion dollar budget while education and social supports are slashed to the very core, why California's prison system has the highest recidivism rate of any state in the nation? But little is written of the individual suffering that occurs in devastating ways o...

BEHIND THESE WALLS By Ian Harewood Free will is all about choices. In prison you have no free will. Every day, you have to do what someone tells you. As a kid I was always trying to fit in. But back in those days, the dark-skinned guys were the butt of jokes in school, the ones who weren't popular....

Deceptive Justice By Jerome Williams, IN We have all heard or recited the United States Pledge of Allegiance, specifically that part which states "with freedom, liberty, and justice for all." I, however, submit to you that this declaration is no more than the line of a master con man. At first glance this argument may appear to be ludicrous at best. However, the truth is quite clear as it has always been present. It has just been suppressed by the continuous indoctrination and veili...

Published in the fall edition of Cornell Univ.'s literary journal, "Writer's Bloc." (2014) First Reversal by Phil Miller "Phil, can you help me?" asks an unfamiliar voice. I'm sitting at my desk in the law library of Five Points Correctional Facility, where I work as the administrative clerk. I lift my head, making eye contact with the stranger. "That depends; what do you need help with?" I ask, hoping that his request will be something simple; I&a...

D. Joseph Chyatte SID# 22150296 Killing the Poor Tonight: A Copernican Revolution in Racial Politics “I remember the day I became colored.” — Zora Neale Hurston, “How it Feels to be Colored Me” I was retching and gagging, physically ill, as I watched the video of Philando Castile’s summary execution play over-and-over on the television. My eyes blurring with tears and my teeth clenched, impotent rage consumed my body . . . thinking of Philando’s partner—that strong, savvy, woman—and their sma...

Most of us believe the parole board Jane Dorotik Most of us believe the Parole Board Commissioners have a very serious job in determining who should stay in prison and who should be released. After all, the burden of public safety would seem to lie squarely on their shoulders. If a prisoner can t, after years of incarceration, prove to these commissioners they are not a menace to public safety, then maybe they shouldn't be released. My guess is this is what the public generally thinks......
