Rik Bogen BEYOND REFORM After the tsunami of arrest, jail, conviction and sentencing receded leaving behind the tangled sea-weed of my life I began to imagine that prison might be a new beginning, an opportunity to radically change, an educational experience. It most certainly is nut not in anyway that which I expected. The first discovery was the magnitude of the resistance to change inherent to the system. Example: The property rule said "one guitar-one harmonica..." so not being ...

Deceptive Justice By Jerome Williams, IN We have all heard or recited the United States Pledge of Allegiance, specifically that part which states "with freedom, liberty, and justice for all." I, however, submit to you that this declaration is no more than the line of a master con man. At first glance this argument may appear to be ludicrous at best. However, the truth is quite clear as it has always been present. It has just been suppressed by the continuous indoctrination and veili...

I have been in the hole, what they call the s.h.u. or s.m.u. in Federal Prison for 5 months now. I thank god B.O.P. gives us a cell mate and we can buy radios. We are only allowed pens though and I am an artist and that makes it extremely hard to draw. At 1st I tried burning the end of a rolled up piece of paper. I accomplished this by using batteries from my radio. I didn't really like the effect so, I paid a orderly (an inmate with special work privileges) 5 stamps for a pencil and the...

My name is Eli Munson according to our government. My true name is E. Portraits and I am so much more than a name or a number. I am a true all around artist. I am currently being housed in the special housing unit otherwise known as the S.H.U. or the hole. If you can imagine prison as being hard mentaly then the hole is 3 times as bad. Being locked up and trying to do anything outside of prison is like being handicapped its like having no hands and you have to rely on the good graces of other...

No longer brainwashed, I've washed my brain of all those submissive decrees. You know, the ones like, "Turn the other cheek" and "Never disobey your [slave] master/' Knowing you are headed for disaster. They still give you wheels to get there faster. On the shoulders of giants defiantly is where I ...

WHAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE? Somehow, the word penitentiary has been misinterpreted and redefined. Today there are pre and post synonyms replacing the word penitentiary. For example, prison, institution, plantation, concentration camp, penal farm, correctional facility, and the big house are substituted names for the word penitentiary. The true term penitentiary derives from the word penitent. I shall ask, what happened to reform and can a person change while in prison? Penitent by definition is b...
